TPL’S TAKE
Kaboom! That’s how you start a hockey game. Pavel off the boards with a nasty-angled goal makes it 1-0 early. I wonder how much the Sabres guys made of the “active boards at the Joe” that Tim Connolly even referenced in his 2nd intermission interview.
SAT Prep Time. Ryan Miller : Poke Checks :: Jimmy Howard : Rebounds. That might be a bit harsh, because Jimmy Howard is straight-up awful at controlling rebounds, but Ryan Miller is slightly snakebitten with the poking. The second Wings goal was a bit fluky, but it looks a tiny bit like the Sidney Crosby gold-medal winning goal with the misplay by Miller.
Anyone else have a minor heart attack when it was apparent we were headed to overtime? An awful feeling, but thank Silver Medalist Brian Rafalski for beating Silver Medalist Ryan Miller and deliver the second very necessary point.
The Wings needed the points a hell of a lot worse than the Sabres did, so this ended nicely. But the Sabres could use all the points they can get, too, to pull away from the Senators in the Northeast. Giving away a point to the Eastern Conference means nothing to me — particularly given how awful the East is this season — so this overtime game was just fine by me.
RE-VISITING THE PRE-GAME QUICK THOUGHTS
1. Two points secured. Next.
2. The Wings did, in fact, capitalize on the chances they got, and they made Ryan Miller pay for the few mistakes he made… or what they could generate out of luck.
3. Buffalo certainly didn’t have control of the game for the most part… mission accomplished, defense.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Big one again… Monday vs. Calgary, who is momentarily in ninth place. The Flames play the Canucks on Sunday, so we’ll be rooting — reluctantly, I’ll add — for the Nucks.

Fortunately Vancouver beat on Ottawa pretty well, so the one point to Buffalo mattered more because the Senators got nothing.
And I can cheer for Vancouver because I like Ryan Kesler and I still want Sammy to be successful. It's not like cheering for the Ducks or anything. 🙂
Watching Sammy last night and realizing he's a 30-goal scorer made me mad at him for no good reason.
Still, I don't have a problem rooting for the Canucks.
Was it me or did the Wings get Ryan Milleritis in the 3rd last night? Seemed they knew who was in net so they didn't want to throw any old bullshit shot at him, instead trying to wait for the perfect shot. Either way, overall I liked how we played except for the second period when it looked like we couldn't find our jump. It was good to see the Wings actually battle through that though instead of giving up the lead and then failing to catch back up.
JJ, I felt the same way when I was watching part of HNIC in last night & saw him get #30 & 31… Granted, I try to rationalize that it has a lot to do with the fact that he's spent time playing with the Sedins, but damn, it would've been nice to have Sammy score some goals for us. Then again, knowing this season, he would've ended up injured and STILL wouldn't be able to find the side of the barn…
Glad to see the game ended exactly how Teresa Miller wanted it to. I love that she wasn't afraid to say that she was hoping for a Wings win because we needed it more. And Ryan, being the classy guy that he is, seemed to be ok with it.
I had a full-blown heart attack/stroke warning going on as soon as we were going to OT. We've sucked so badly in that department this year, and I just felt like if we had to go to a shootout, we'd be embarassed pretty quickly. We HAD to win this in OT. Glad to see that "Rookie of the Year" Myers made a rookie mistake & that Raf capitalized on it. I hope that Olympic Rafalski shows up more now!
Great night for H2H & the kids! I think Miller found a way to show that he liked kids, but did it without embarassing himself. I thought about donating a chunk of change if Drew scored on Ryan…maybe I'll find another circumstance to do so during the Pens game next week…
