When your Wings came from

Yup, it’s August alright.

With nothing relevant to discuss in the Red Wings world, aside from the Grand Rapids Griffins’ schedule being released this afternoon, I figured I’d take a minute for something fun.

Building on an idea from Nightmare on Helm Street (which is always a fun read), which published an article about a Red Wing drafted from each round of the draft, I thought it might be fun to list the entire team (including prospects and other assets) in the order in which they were selected in their respective drafts. I won’t write a full article about each pick, I’ll leave that to Animal Drew.

There are some curious patterns. For example, Andreas Lilja, Nicklas Lidstrom and Chris Osgood were all selected 54th overall, but Lilja was a second rounder, while the other two were third rounders. Obviously, throughout the years, the number of teams in the league has changed, and there have been nifty things like compensatory picks.

Without further ado:

  1. The Oilers.

But, seriously, he was a scoring machine in Junior. Of course, so were Darren McCarty and Brent Gretzky that same season…

It's funny how Junior studs become role players in the NHL and STILL find success. I'm looking at you, Darren Helm.
