“but I’d love to be pleasantly surprised by a goaltender’s development just once.” I was really doubtful of Mike Vernon’s cigar-smoking prowess when he first joined the Wings in the mid 90s. He rapidly developed and refined his technique, and in 1997 he finally proved me wrong. He smoked the shit out of that thing.
