Comments on: An Issue of Commitment https://tpl.detroit.hockey/2011/07/29/an-issue-of-commitment/ Archived version of TPL - Hosted by DetroitHockey.Net Sat, 30 Jul 2011 02:30:00 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.3 By: Zachary MacRostie https://tpl.detroit.hockey/2011/07/29/an-issue-of-commitment/#comment-4434 Sat, 30 Jul 2011 02:30:00 +0000 https://tplarchive.detroithockey.net/?p=4838#comment-4434 This is an unfortunate situation because I really don’t see how this can be resolved amicably without fucking someone over.  Quite honestly, I don’t think it is that dire.  College to pro is a percentage that climbs every year, especially the last three years and due to the draft system has about 34 percent of draftees in or committed to a college.  But the number of players breaking that commitment is not a staggering loss.  For every player that leaves, there are others to take his place.  A top prospect is just that, a prospect, until he actually earns his keep in the NHL.  As of last year over 30 percent of the NHL is made up of former collegians, which is an increase of a huge 35 percent from ten years ago. 

Sure, your Crosby and Stamkos like player may think they want to give it the old college try and then pull out but I don’t think it’s actually a problem until the collegiate athlete in the NHL percentage starts decreasing.  There is plenty of Canadian bacon that comes and sizzles in the U.S. college hockey system as well.
