My best friend was an Olympic gymnast and I have some other good friends who are, I guess you could say, well-known in the gymnastics world as well. If that has taught me anything, it’s that sportspeople are no different from anyone else. I guess that’s why traditionally I’ve had little interest in things like autographs (excepting Howie’s for the Children) and if I ever happened upon one of these guys and a conversation ensued, chances are extremely high that it would have nothing to do with hockey. I almost never talk gymnastics with my “elite gymnastics” friends. I suppose when something consumes so much of your time, no matter how much you love it, when you are away from it you want to be just that- away from it. I’m sure those guys have very similar interests to many of us beyond hockey. Experiencing the inside world of “pro sports” really changes the way you view it, I suppose. At the end of the day, all people are just people. Even Mubarak is just a person (and today a much smarter one than he was yesterday!). Very great read here. I really enjoy hearing about the non-hockey stuff, including the glimpses of Holland, Bedard, and Babcock outside of the roles in which we typically get to see them. Thanks a million for sharing some of it with us, Petrella.

Yea. I actually played baseball with Greg, who’s a year behind me, so I went to the Holland’s house regularly back in middle school. Brad was still at CC at that time so I met him a few times. The story of the first time we met is kind of funny, but too long to post here.

You’re a youngster.

I graduated in 2000. Brad was a year ahead of me.

I probably could turn it into 25 posts, but I chopped it off at 5. By Tuesday, the whole story will be out there for ya!

Oh, and of course, this is absolutely gripping stuff. I’m jealous beyond belief.

It’s as if I am right there with you… picturing these guys in my head. I love it. It’s too bad we can’t have more of an inside look all year long.
